The Drift Boat Advantage
Located just fifteen minutes south of Soldotna, the Kasilof River drains immense Tustumena Lake into Cook Inlet. Unlike the motorized powerboat sections of the lower Kenai, state regulations restrict outboard motors on upper stretches of the Kasilof.
We float quietly in a custom Willie drift boat. There is no exhaust, no engine noise, and no wakes. You glide silently into tail-outs and current seams, frequently witnessing moose, bald eagles, and black bears along the wooded banks.
Kings, Sockeye & Fall Silvers
The Kasilof sees one of the earliest King Salmon runs on the Kenai Peninsula, beginning in late May with healthy returns of hatchery fish that anglers can harvest. In July, large runs of sockeye run the gravel bars with minimal crowding.
By mid-August and September, aggressive Coho (Silver) Salmon stack into the lower tidewater pools. Back-bouncing eggs, twitching jigs, and casting spinners from the drift boat yields fast-paced, acrobatic strikes.
