Tactics & Technique

THE ART OF FLOSSING THE GLACIAL SEAM

Sockeye salmon do not actively hunt bait once they transition from the saltwater of Cook Inlet into the freshwater currents of the Kenai. Instead, they travel tightly along river gravel bars within 5 to 15 feet of the bank to avoid heavy mid-river hydraulics.

We position our Willie powerboats anchored against gravel bars or step onto pristine gravel shoals. Using dialed weights and hand-tied coho flies, our anglers present leaders at the exact bottom depth of the traveling pods.

When hooked, sockeye react with explosive runs, cartwheeling two feet out of the river and making blistering downstream sprints that test your drag and forearm strength.
